Chennai Port, formerly known as Madras Port, is one of the major ports along the Bay of Bengal located in Chennai. The port opened officially in 1881 whereas maritime trade flourished in Chennai centuries before the port opened. It is an artificial and all-weather port with wet docks. It has contributed to the economic growth and manufacturing boom in Tamil Nadu. The port has 3 docks, 24 berths and draft ranging from 12 to 16.5 m (39 to 54 ft). The port handled nearly 60 million tonnes of cargo in 2009-10. Its container traffic crossed 1 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) for the first time in 2008 and is the 86th largest container port in the world.
